Federal Disability Insurance: SSI and SSDI (2017)

If you are no longer able to work or are trying to plan ahead in case you become unable to work, you may be looking for information about ways to replace your income. The Social Security Administration (SSA) offers two possible options that may be able to help you, should you qualify.  This handout gives an overview on eligibility for both Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

How to Appeal a Denial of SSA Benefits (2017)

If you are unable to work because of cancer, you may need to apply for benefits through the Social Security Administration (SSA) in order to receive some income. Two types of disability benefits offered through SSA are Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Many people who apply for these benefits are denied when they first apply. If your application for SSA benefits is denied, this handout gives an overview of the process for appealing the denial.

Working While Receiving Benefits: SSA Trial Work Period

While many people need Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits for the rest of their lives, some people recover enough to return to work. Ultimately, the Social Security Administration (SSA) would like people to re-enter the workforce, so it provides incentives to make this transition easier.  This handout explains how working while receiving disability benefits through the Social Security Administration can impact your benefits, and gives an overview of the Trial Work Period.
