Cancer Justice Program to Transfer From Disability Rights Legal Center to Public Counsel
December 18, 2025—We are pleased to share the news that the DRLC’s Cancer Justice program will transfer to Public Counsel, ensuring the continued work of the nation’s premier pro bono program dedicated to the legal rights of people with cancer.
The formal step follows a decades-long relationship and collaboration between Public Counsel and DRLC around a wide array of issues that impact underserved communities.
In recent weeks, due to fundraising challenges, the DRLC board made the difficult decision to lay off its staff and transfer operations – and has been actively engaged in conversations to allow some or all of DRLC’s mission to continue under a different banner.
This announcement from Public Counsel is the first part of that transition plan, and the DRLC board will have more to share in the near future.
