About the Case
In 2008, the Johnson v. LASD lawsuit was filed on behalf of inmates with mobility impairments in the Los Angeles County jail system. Plaintiffs argued that the inaccessibility issues within the jails violated their rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), California and federal statutes, and the Eighth and Fourteenth Amendments of the U.S. Constitution. This case led to a class action settlement approved by a federal judge in 2015.
DRLC’s Case Monitoring
The Disability Rights Legal Center (DRLC) monitors LASD’s compliance with the settlement agreement by ensuring that LASD is assisting and providing class members housed in their facilities with the following:
- Wheelchairs, canes, or walker classifications
- Broken mobility devices

- Physical accessibility of facility (ADA showers and cells)
- Equal access to programming
- Recreation and out-of-cell time
